Family Trip #6: Utah, Washington, California, and Utah

Towards the end of July in 1993, our little family of four flew to Utah. We visited my family for a week, attending my brother Craig's farewell before his mission to England. He went into the MTC at the beginning of August.

After the first week, we borrowed my parents' little Honda 2-door Civic and drove about 18 hours to Priest Lake, Idaho, to visit Scott's father and his wife Bekki at a cabin they share with relatives.  We stayed several days and enjoyed the R&R.  We did some boating and a little fishing (no fish were harmed!). We also visited a lookout tower which was for spotting forest fires. The cabin was small but right on the lake. Scott had broken his arm about a month before but he managed to do everything he needed to do. David was 3 years old and Jan was 7 months--he was huge.

After the reunion, we drove to Tacoma then to Ocean Shores for the one and only Bergeson family reunion. Scott's parents were divorced but decided to co-host a reunion. They rented a beach house and almost everyone came. It was a little tense at times for various reasons but it was good they did it since it never happened again. It was also chilly. The beach in Washington is very cold and windy. There were a few brave souls who ventured in the water briefly. There was also some kite-flying which made more sense. In attendance were Guy, wife Jean, and their three children. Mike and Cindy Fordham and their three boys--Daniel, Aaron and Brian, Phyllis, Neil and Bekki, Scott, Paula, David and Jan. Just Scott's brother Glenn was missing.

After the reunion, we drove to Vancouver, Washington, to visit Scott's grandfather and his wife, Dora. Scott's grandfather was in a nursing home because of dementia. Scott's grandmother died about the time he was born so Dora was the only grandma he knew. Neil's mother also died a few years after Scott was born and he didn't remember her.

After that visit, we drove down to the Broadbent family reunion in the Sierras at Camp Ross Relles (I think). For our family talent we sang, "Dogs"--a song we got from a children's CD by Dan Crow. It's a pretty funny song. At the reunion we did crafts and relay races, lots of talking, singing and lots of eating. Broadbent reunions were a good time.

After the reunion, we drove back to Orem with my family. Since it had been 6 weeks since Scott broke his arm, his cast could be taken off. So on the way home, we stopped at a hardware store in Nevada, Scott bought some kind of cutter and he cut off his cast. He is a very resourceful man.

Back in Orem, we celebrated Scott's 28th birthday. He was just a young'un. (Brian and Neil in the background)

We flew home on Monday, finishing our epic trip that lasted about 3 weeks. We got to see a lot of our extended families. We drove about 2700 miles and also flew from Wisconsin to Utah and back. It was very generous of my parents to loan us their car which we put all those miles on. They only had two cars and it must have been a hardship to have one missing for two weeks.

Visiting Susquehanna: The Priesthood Restoration Site

On our way home from Palmyra, we decided to go a couple of hours out of our way to visit the recently opened Priesthood Restoration Site along the Susquehanna River.  This is where we believe that Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery received the keys of the Aaronic Priesthood from John the Baptist which gave them the authority to baptize.  This site also has the restored Isaac and Elizabeth Hale home where Joseph and Emma lived for a year as well as the home where Joseph and Emma lived on their own. We spent a couple of hours there and I wouldn't have minded a few more minutes but we had a long way to go that night.  It's a beautiful setting, very much in rural Pennsylvania.  However, on the day we were there, cars at a racetrack nearby were detracting from the peace and quiet.  I'm guessing that's not as big of a problem on weekdays. The Hale Family was quite well-off for their day so their home was probably nicely decorated with wallpaper and carpet. ...

Book Review: Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper

This is a juvenile fiction book about a young girl named Melody with severe cerebral palsy.  Her body doesn't allow her to feed herself, speak, or do much at all.  She's very intelligent with a photographic memory but she can't really communicate.  Finally, in 5th grade, she gets a "Medi-Talker" which is a computer that speaks what she types in.  Finally she has a voice. This book explores what it is like to be severely physically disabled but not mentally disabled. It seems like one of the most frustrating of all scenarios.  She is completely aware of all the cruelty (subtle and otherwise) that her classmates inflict on her because they don't really want to include her in their activities.  One of the saddest moments in the book comes when she realizes that every one of her special ed classmates is kind, where the "normal" ones are not.  Who really has the worse disability? The book was a quick read and fairly enjoyable.  Wha...

Hansen Family Plot in the Provo Cemetery

On Memorial Day this year, our family went to the Provo Cemetery, as we do almost every year. We spent some time at the Hansen Family plot which contains the grave of my 2nd great-grandparents, Peter and Mary Hansen. They both emigrated from Denmark with their spouses to Utah. My grandfather lost his first wife Ane to cholera on the plains outside of St. Joseph, Missouri, along with three of his little boys within a very short time--about one month. It's a sad story but it's also one of admirable resilience. He brought his one surviving son, Jorgen, to Utah. He married his second wife Maren (Anglicized to Mary) some 9 years later in Utah  She had been married before but lost her first husband at an unknown date. I wish I knew more about her but she left very few records, although I could do more research! Peter and Maren had 6 more children together. The youngest two were twins, Enoch and Ephraim. Ephraim is my great-grandfather and is buried in California. He is the father of ...
