Family History: Aug. 2, 2009-Sept. 27, 2009

August 2, 2009 (Scott)

On Tuesday we drove to Bear Lake, where we camped T & W nights. In honor of the occasion we bought a new tent, a canopy, and a 3-man inflatable raft. We borrowed a 2-man raft from the Hansens and everyone enjoyed the water. Lincoln especially enjoyed the boats. Everett too. Garrett read a lot, so did Susanna. She started Harry Potter, Bk 1, on Thursday, July 23. Today she started Book 7, having read all of the others in the past 10 days. She was inspired by her cousin Anna Hansen who is reading all of the books this summer too. On the way home from Bear Lake we took the long way and stopped at the Pepperidge Farms factory north of Logan, the Caspar Ice Cream company (selling 50 Fat Boys for $12), Bergeson Hill outside of Cornish, Martin Harris' gravesite in Clarkston, and passed by the Willey home (of Willey-Martin handcart fame) in Wellsville. Today Jan passed off the camping and personal management merit badges. Lincoln passed off the art merit badge. on Friday I took the boys to the fathers and sons campout at Blackhawk campground up Payson Canyon.

Everett had a good week at Clear Creek, the elementary school camp near Schofield. He brought home some coal encased in plastic and a little trap. He liked playing in the forest and the ropes course. Jan and Garrett attended a mini band camp (8-noon) this week. They also watched the DCI quarterfinals at the Provo Towne Center theater ($18 each!). Lincoln hung out and played a little D&D and a little ping pong. Susanna and T went to a pool party at the Oakesons. T went down their slide about 70 times. Camille moved down to 1/16 on her oxygen tank. Mindy lives in great anticipation of her birthday. Frau Czadek sent her a necklace. Jan said to Mindy, "I like Butterfingers." To which Mindy replied, "But marbles are not so good because you can't eat them."

August 16, 2009 (Scott)

Mindy turned 5 and celebrated her birthday a day early on Friday. Paula hosted a party with 6 little girls and they played "kiss the frog" and "princess and the pea." They decorated princess hats and ate and played. She loves the little fairies she got. I turned 44 and cycled the Alpine Loop plus a little to make it 44.44 miles. Jan and Garrett were in band camp all week--8am-8pm. They had fun and Garrett said it was painful for his back, legs, and feet. Jan's section movie (trumpet section) was fun to make and they won. Garrett's mellophone section won clean-up. Camille went to a swallow study at AF hospital. Cam, Min, Su, T, Lincoln, and Ev went to the Thanksgiving Point garden on Tuesday. [with parents I assume] L and G worked out their complicated school schedules. Susanna is working on an experimental point system. Everett spent 3 hours mowing half of the Judds and half of the Chases. He blames it on the mowers. Paula continues to stress over Camille's throwing up and continually adjusts Cam's feeding schedule.

August 23, 2009 (Scott)

Today was the Oquirrh Mt. temple dedication. I went with J, G, L, E, and S in the morning and Paula is there now for the afternoon session. School started and everyone seems to like their classes. Ev & Jan got new watches. G & J went to the temple yesterday with some friends from marching band. Susanna has Mrs. Hardy in 3rd grade ALL and reports that she is strict but nice. Talmage has Mrs. Carter like Susanna did last year. Ev has Mr. Hall, like Lincoln before. Friday night Clyn, Thys, and Lana stayed here overnight. On Saturday they went swimming with us. Camille went swimming without her canula and seemed to really enjoy herself. Mindy is excited for school this Thursday. G & J are taking classes at Mt. View [but mostly at Orem].

August 30, 2009 (Scott)

Mindy started kindergarten. She was very excited. She switched to riding a small bicycle, and she seems to like it. Jan and Garrett both have plenty of homework, and late nights are already the rule. Everett had a Board of Review and is now officially a Tenderfoot. Lincoln is getting 6 merit badges at the court of honor this week. Su and T both had soccer practice this week and got their uniforms. Camille learned how to say, "baby." Mindy and Jan had colds this week. Paula gave G & J lessons in time management. Camille misses her siblings when they are all gone at school. I am Talmage's soccer coach. Jan is a semi-finalist for the National Merit Scholarship because of his 35 ACT score and GPA.

Sept. 6, 2009 (Scott)

Talmage and Susanna each had their first soccer game of the season this week. They each scored a goal. Talmage's team won:  1 billion to 3. Everett had his first football practice. Garrett, Jan, Lincoln, and Ev all earned either a merit badge or rank advancement. Jan has a lot of homework and is reading Oliver Twist. Garrett also stayed up late doing homework. He earned his Life rank. Jan has only 2 merit badges left. Lincoln played his bassoon in a recital yesterday. Paula has been very busy canning peaches and salsa. Scott finally bought some new shoes, [after going to MANY stores] but he is going to take them back. Mindy went swimming with Mom and Dad on Friday. Camille continues to be cute and had two non-throw-up days in a row. She also climbed the stairs by herself.

Sept. 13, 2009 (Scott)

Jan and Dad ran 6 miles for Jan's Duty to God requirement. We ran it in 52 minutes, 8 minutes under the limit. Garrett, Lincoln, and Jan participated in a stake service activity at the Orem cemetery. On Monday everyone but Jan went on a hike on the Five Water trail. It's up Spanish Fork Canyon, near Diamondfork campground. There were some cool (and stinky) hot springs there, and it was a fairly popular site. It was a 2-mile hike each way. Susanna and Talmage's soccer teams continue to dominate their soccer opponents. At a recent game,  Talmage and buddies started singing, "We are cool and we are strong! No one wants to sing along!" After setting a goal, Mindy knows her address now. Everett had his first flag football game yesterday. He's playing icenter. Lincoln played piano for a baptism yesterday. Camille went to a gross motor skills class. Paula says you can't teach Camille anything about walking. She knows how to do it but is terrified of falling, so she won't. Friday night Paula and I went to the ward adult dinner at the Dallin's cabin. Monday evening we had a Hansen family picnic at Big Springs. Susanna plays halfback on her soccer team and sometimes fullback.

Sept. 20, 2009 (Scott)

Garrett and Jan auditioned for All-State on Saturday. Gar thought he did worse this year than last. Jan thought he did a good job. Everett had another flag football game yesterday, and Su and T had soccer twice. On Friday, Ev, Lincoln, Su, T, Cam and Min went to the Foothill Fall Festival. It was VERY windy. Paula helped staff the horse ride and two other booths. Mindy rode the ponies four times. Su and T got their faces painted. Ev got wet in the dunk tank. And a great time was had by all. Lincoln and the scouts weeded Jan's Eagle Project. J & G went to the YM volleyball tourney. Although 16 people signed up from our ward, J & G were our only representatives. Cam went to the doctor with Paula. Cam's kidney function is around 17%, less than 20% last November, and about 17.5% in July. She is getting steadily worse. But she is officially big enough for a transplant now. When her function decreases more [below 15%] and her supplementary O2 needs decline significantly, then we'll talk more seriously about a transplant.

Sept. 27, 2009 (Scott)

Paula turned 41 this week. She enjoyed her book Nurture Shock, her pedometer, and other things. Jan went to Homecoming and had a good time. Jan and Garrett performed in the Nebo marching band competition yesterday. They took 4th overall and 2nd in their division. Lincoln went geocaching with the Scouts yesterday on an overnight campout. Everett's flag football team continues to win. Yesterday was the third game in a row in which they blanked the other team. Susanna's soccer team lost their first game. Everyone besides me went to the Family Night marching band. Talmage's soccer team just keeps winning. Mindy broke her arm jumping on the trampoline. It was a buckle fracture. She has a pink cast.

Do Dots Family System

The original post was written in January of 2015. I wrote an update at the bottom of this post in March 2021. A few months ago, a friend of mine told me about something she was doing in her family to help her family function better.  Her teenage autistic son had been struggling a lot so they had been working with behavior therapists to help him and this "Do Dots Family System" had been recommended.  As she described it, I was greatly intrigued since it sounded like something I wanted to implement at my own house. I looked into it and decided to purchase it right after Thanksgiving.  Here is my review of how it has worked for us over the last six weeks or so. The basic idea of the chart is that children need to take care of their responsibilities before they get any privileges.  It strongly reinforces the concept of "Work Before Play" .  The chart helps children see in a very visual way that, until they have completed their responsibilities, they are on Level

Hansen Family Reunion 2024, Thursday afternoon

For lunch on Thursday, Lauren and Kurt made Cafe Rio which was delicious.  On Thursday afternoon, we had free time at the lake. Heidi and Aaron rented a pontoon boat and took people out for rides. This was very popular. Some of us went on the kayaks and/or swimming or just hung out on the beach.

2024 Hansen Family Reunion, Wednesday

Recently we had another Hansen Family Reunion at Bear Lake. We've been having these destination reunions since 2008. There were about 70 of us in attendance. Bruce and Michelle organized the activities and did a good job. I enjoyed myself! Hopefully lots of other people did too. We showed up on Wednesday afternoon and enjoyed a taco salad dinner, served by Neil and Kristie's family. We also worked on two mixer games:  a word search with the names of all 100 Hansen family members as well as a Bingo card that involved finding people with different attributes like recent high school graduation, birthdays in certain months, etc. The word search was definitely the most popular. Also popular was playing Nine-Square and Sandy Pickle (a cross between pickle ball and badminton). Thys and Katrina might have won! After dinner, we had an FHE activity/lesson. Liz had made a book with stories of the first ancestors to join the church. She had selected different stories for us to act out in g
