Family History: Oct. 4, 2009-Nov. 29, 2009

Oct. 4, 2009 (Scott)
Today Paula is going to the afternoon session of conference, taking 3 children with her. It was another busy week of homework for Jan and Garrett. Paula and Camille went to another gross motor skills class and Paula has renewed determination to have Camille walk everywhere she goes. Camille is fast with her walker but very reluctant to walk on her own. Su & T went on a field trip to listen to the Utah Symphony at MVHS. T liked when they played some Indiana Jones music. Susanna liked the "March of the Goblins." Jan & Garrett went to the NHS meeting and Jan is glad not to be on the NHS council this year. They also went to a morningside and were underwhelmed by the hugeness of the "huge" cinnamon rolls. Everett hurt his shoulder at school Friday. He had it x-rayed but it was "mildly sprained." Lincoln auditioned for UVYS and is playing in the Phil. Mindy is making new friends at kindergarten. Camille likes to sit on the violin case next to the computer table.

Today was stake conference--two conferences in two weekends. On Monday all the children were out of school. On Friday Paula and I took Lincoln and Garrett to the Hale Theater's "Little Shop of Horrors." it was a little dark, but with a good Faustian message. Jan took the SAT on Saturday. Everett caught a touchdown pass in his football game and tackled the other team's ball carrier in the end zone for a safety. Susanna went to the orthodontist and she'll need hardware eventually. Lincoln watched the Joseph Smith movie in SLC with his Scout troop. Talmage is enjoying his piano lessons. Mindy's newest role in life is to be a helper in school. Camille gets cuter and more opinionated with each passing day. She knows a lot of words:  out, up, cat, dog, cow, etc. Paula excavated Everett's and Lincoln's room. It was a major accomplishment. Lincoln made a new wallet out of duct tape and he is going to rent his Sansa fuze player to his brothers for $.25/hour.

Garrett and Jan played in the marching band half-time show at the OHS football game. They sounded great. On Thursday for UEA Paula took J, G, L, E, S, T, m, and C to South Fork park for a picnic with the Hardmans. Apparently none of our boys talked to any of the Hardman girls. But Susanna & Vivienne had a good time. Also, Jan, Gar, Ev, and Lincoln slept outside on the trampoline Friday night. Ev earned the swimming merit badge at the Rec Center. Camille went to church today without any supplementary oxygen. We planted a weeping cherry tree in the backyard and some other bushes at Jan's old Eagle Project. On Monday our family removed an old dead bush from Sister Young's front yard. We dug all around it and pulled the stump out with the van. We got a new laser printer.

More marching band for Jan & Garrett: Davis on Tuesday and Mt. View on Saturday. They took 3rd and 2nd. Last week Garrett found a black widow spider in the the basement. Camille turned 2. We tried her without supplementary oxygen for a few days. She did well on her O2 sats, but her heart rate was a little higher than normal. The doctor encouraged us to give her a little more time and try again next month. Mindy's cast was removed this week and she's happy to have it off. Talmage likes to hsoot rubber bands and experiment with them. He is going to be an asparagus for Halloween. Everett wants to be a banana. Everett's football season is over and their team was undefeated this year. Lincoln enjoyed playing "Clue" and eating pie and ice cream at their deacons' activity. Susanna planned her birthday party and made leaf decoration for her room. I drove the trailer for the OHS marching band. Paula worked lots on Cub Scouts. Today in church Camille said "stinky" and then proceeded to fill her diaper.

Mindy said, "Mom! I coughed and my stinkies came out! It was so cool!" Mindy was little red riding hood. Talmage was a cucumber (everyone thought he was Gumby or a pickle). Susanna was an owl. Camille was a poodle. Everett was a banana. Lincoln was a tomato. Paula was a witch. I was a pumpkin. Garrett and Jan were a pumpkin and tomato in their Wednesday band concert. They were also a Dementor and Harry Potter on Halloween night when we were trick-or-treating. They also tried to scare trick-or-treaters with Camille's monitor, but it didn't work. Susanna turned 9 and had a party. We cleaned out the garden and rototilled in a bunch of leaves and nitrogen.

Nov. 8, 2009 (Paula)

Marching band season is now officially over. The boys went on tour with the band down to St. George from Thursday to early Sunday morning. The band had two competitions and did well in both, taking first in their class in each. They also became finalists in the Band of America overall competition and took 7th. Mom and Dad were chaperones on the trip but drove in our own car so we could go down later on Thursday and come home earlier on Saturday night. Grandpa and Grandma babysat the youngest 6 children for us and they had fun [probably the kids].Grandpa took Susanna to her Daddy-Daughter party because Scott was in St. George. I have a horrible cold but otherwise the trip was fun. I saw my friend Amy Crane whose daughter is in the AF band and talked to her. We also saw other friends. The band kids were well-behaved.

We've been suffering from colds this week. Everett went to a bday party for Katie in his class. The kids went on a picnic with Grandma and Grandpa. We put Linux on our newest computer. Today was the Primary program and the kids did a good job. Scott and the kids did a solo together on one of the verses and did well.

Jan and Garrett sang and Lincoln played piano in Sac. Mtg. today, "If the Savior Stood Beside Me." Susanna, Everett, Lincoln, and Talmage played in the duet festival. T got 36, E & L got 38, and Susanna got 39 (out of 40). Garrett and the teachers' quorum are making swords--a stainless blade and a brass handle. Jan auditioned for All-State jazz band and thought he did well in the audition. Mindy, Paula, Cam, Su, and T had colds this week. Jan and esp. Garrett are missing their marching band buddies.

Nov. 22, 2009 (Scott)

Lincoln played bassoon in the Utah Valley Youth Symphony concert on Monday. Tuesday was the OHS marching band banquet, and Scott went with Garrett and Jan. Susanna performed in the 3rd grade opera. Wednesday Paula had her book club here and Garrett ran into a car and turned his front bicycle wheel into a pretzel. Friday was a game night. Su invited Rachel and Mina, T invited Shaw. Everett invited Noah and Gehrig, and Lincoln invited Austin and Kip. They ate a lot of chips and drank an impressive amount of soda. Jan and Garrett went to a marching band party at the Heath's. Saturday we made 48 bottles of applesauce. Ev and Jan and Paula and Scott went to a "laugh out loud" improv comedy "concert." Mindy got a good report card: 4's on everything and 3 on turning in homework on time.

Camille had 2 doctors' appointments. Her kidney function is down to 14% and she is headed for a transplant. On Jan's birthday we will attend a pre-transplant clinic. At the dysphagia clinic, they recommended doubling all of her reflux meds. It seems to have helped.

Nov. 29, 2009 (Scott)

We had Thanksgiving here this year. Paula's parents, Bruce and family, Brian, Heidi and family, Tyler and Liesl all came over--26 people in all. We had popcorn for dinner later in the evening. Su & T & Gar all had 4 pieces of pie. Paula had her first personal fitness merit badge test on Saturday, with about 25% attendance, almost half of which was our family. We all went out to eat at Joe Vera's last night. Another couple at the restaurant that we did not know paid for our meal, which was a very nice surprise for us. We learned about it when we got up to leave. The children had school only Monday and Tuesday and the rest of the week was off. Gar and Jan went with the marching band and played the BYU fight song on the lawn of the Bates' neighbor as a practical joke. The victims are big Ute fans. (BYU won 26-23).

Visiting Susquehanna: The Priesthood Restoration Site

On our way home from Palmyra, we decided to go a couple of hours out of our way to visit the recently opened Priesthood Restoration Site along the Susquehanna River.  This is where we believe that Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery received the keys of the Aaronic Priesthood from John the Baptist which gave them the authority to baptize.  This site also has the restored Isaac and Elizabeth Hale home where Joseph and Emma lived for a year as well as the home where Joseph and Emma lived on their own. We spent a couple of hours there and I wouldn't have minded a few more minutes but we had a long way to go that night.  It's a beautiful setting, very much in rural Pennsylvania.  However, on the day we were there, cars at a racetrack nearby were detracting from the peace and quiet.  I'm guessing that's not as big of a problem on weekdays. The Hale Family was quite well-off for their day so their home was probably nicely decorated with wallpaper and carpet. ...

Book Review: Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper

This is a juvenile fiction book about a young girl named Melody with severe cerebral palsy.  Her body doesn't allow her to feed herself, speak, or do much at all.  She's very intelligent with a photographic memory but she can't really communicate.  Finally, in 5th grade, she gets a "Medi-Talker" which is a computer that speaks what she types in.  Finally she has a voice. This book explores what it is like to be severely physically disabled but not mentally disabled. It seems like one of the most frustrating of all scenarios.  She is completely aware of all the cruelty (subtle and otherwise) that her classmates inflict on her because they don't really want to include her in their activities.  One of the saddest moments in the book comes when she realizes that every one of her special ed classmates is kind, where the "normal" ones are not.  Who really has the worse disability? The book was a quick read and fairly enjoyable.  Wha...

Hansen Family Plot in the Provo Cemetery

On Memorial Day this year, our family went to the Provo Cemetery, as we do almost every year. We spent some time at the Hansen Family plot which contains the grave of my 2nd great-grandparents, Peter and Mary Hansen. They both emigrated from Denmark with their spouses to Utah. My grandfather lost his first wife Ane to cholera on the plains outside of St. Joseph, Missouri, along with three of his little boys within a very short time--about one month. It's a sad story but it's also one of admirable resilience. He brought his one surviving son, Jorgen, to Utah. He married his second wife Maren (Anglicized to Mary) some 9 years later in Utah  She had been married before but lost her first husband at an unknown date. I wish I knew more about her but she left very few records, although I could do more research! Peter and Maren had 6 more children together. The youngest two were twins, Enoch and Ephraim. Ephraim is my great-grandfather and is buried in California. He is the father of ...
