Family History: April 11, 1999-May 4, 1999

 April 11, 1999 (Paula)

Today David's new glasses broke when someone stepped on them. Yesterday we bought a "reconditioned" Bosch mixer for $100. When we came home I made 4 loaves of bread. It was very easy to use and I look forward to using it more. We also bought a mattress for Lincoln to use in a week after Scott's sister Cindy sleeps on it. She is staying over Friday and Saturday. Scott's going to NIST tomorrow until Friday. We worked on David and Jan's Great Brain presentations for next week.

Last week we bought a trampoline. The kids have really enjoyed playing on it. David turned 9 last Sunday. He got lots of clothes, Legos, a watch and an insect book. His grandpa gave him a $25 gift certificate to a bookstore. So he bought a Garfield comic book and a Matt Christopher book. We had the Hansens over for Easter dinner. JoEllen brought her boyfriend [Mark] and Craig brought his girlfriend. We had a big trifle for Grandma Hansen turning 79, Bruce turning 27 and David turning 9. Jan went to school as usual. Garrett did too. Lincoln's going to nursery today. Everett's learned to bite when he wants me to hold him. We made deviled eggs out of our Easter eggs and Garrett prefers them to dessert--he calls them "Doubled eggs." Everett weighs almost 20 lbs. now and loves to click his tongue and sniff.

We went camping at Zion's National Park on Wednesday and came back Friday evening. Garrett liked making s'mores and sleeping in our tent. He didn't like playing tag or the prickers. David liked going on hikes and building fires and s'mores. He didn't like burning his nose with a piece of marshmallow. Jan liked climbing the big rock, hikes, s'mores, sleeping in his sleeping bag. He didn't like going in the car and smoke getting in his eyes. Lincoln liked the long tunnel. Everett was not the happiest camper and I hated how dirty he got and how unhappy he was at times. He hated his car seat. We think camping with him will be easier when he can walk. He did take a few steps on his own this week. Scott and I enjoyed the hike to the Emerald Pools. Scott also liked the echoes. The scenery was beautiful. We didn't like the weather which turned wet and cold afterwards. We came home and planted 3 trees, 5 grapes, 10 raspberries, and replanted 4 asparagus. It was a lot of work. It rained a lot last night.

Tuesday Grandma Bergeson finished her mission. Last Sunday the Bergeson relatives came for dinner. Tuesday Scott helped her pack and clean. We are looking for a new van to buy. We talked to the Cascade principal about improving the school.

Lincoln keeps changing his career plans. First he wanted to be a dumpster, then he wanted to be Santa, now he says he's going to be a Halloween monster. I guess he really could do all 3! Everett has had a bad cold and wouldn't drink his bottle or even a sipper cup but yesterday he started to feel better. Scott and celebrated our 10th anniversary last week. We went out to the Olive Garden and then took our major garlic breath to the temple. Scott brought me 10 roses and chocolates and a thoughtful card. I didn't give him anything.

I attended some of Women's Conference last week--Thursday and Friday afternoons. Thursday was a disappointment, thanks to the crowds and classes that didn't live up to their billing. But Friday was quite enjoyable and rejuvenated me. Scott stayed with the children while I went.

Lincoln is getting much better at doing jobs. Garrett and Lincoln pulled a Goldilocks trick and walked into the Call's house while they were gone today. Hopefully they didn't do any damage! Scott fixed more sprinkler pipe and I finished a Sunday dress. David passed off his 3's in division. Jan is close to passing off Level 6 on his math tests.

It snowed a lot on General Conference weekend so they made a snowman

Visiting Susquehanna: The Priesthood Restoration Site

On our way home from Palmyra, we decided to go a couple of hours out of our way to visit the recently opened Priesthood Restoration Site along the Susquehanna River.  This is where we believe that Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery received the keys of the Aaronic Priesthood from John the Baptist which gave them the authority to baptize.  This site also has the restored Isaac and Elizabeth Hale home where Joseph and Emma lived for a year as well as the home where Joseph and Emma lived on their own. We spent a couple of hours there and I wouldn't have minded a few more minutes but we had a long way to go that night.  It's a beautiful setting, very much in rural Pennsylvania.  However, on the day we were there, cars at a racetrack nearby were detracting from the peace and quiet.  I'm guessing that's not as big of a problem on weekdays. The Hale Family was quite well-off for their day so their home was probably nicely decorated with wallpaper and carpet. ...

Book Review: Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper

This is a juvenile fiction book about a young girl named Melody with severe cerebral palsy.  Her body doesn't allow her to feed herself, speak, or do much at all.  She's very intelligent with a photographic memory but she can't really communicate.  Finally, in 5th grade, she gets a "Medi-Talker" which is a computer that speaks what she types in.  Finally she has a voice. This book explores what it is like to be severely physically disabled but not mentally disabled. It seems like one of the most frustrating of all scenarios.  She is completely aware of all the cruelty (subtle and otherwise) that her classmates inflict on her because they don't really want to include her in their activities.  One of the saddest moments in the book comes when she realizes that every one of her special ed classmates is kind, where the "normal" ones are not.  Who really has the worse disability? The book was a quick read and fairly enjoyable.  Wha...

Hansen Family Plot in the Provo Cemetery

On Memorial Day this year, our family went to the Provo Cemetery, as we do almost every year. We spent some time at the Hansen Family plot which contains the grave of my 2nd great-grandparents, Peter and Mary Hansen. They both emigrated from Denmark with their spouses to Utah. My grandfather lost his first wife Ane to cholera on the plains outside of St. Joseph, Missouri, along with three of his little boys within a very short time--about one month. It's a sad story but it's also one of admirable resilience. He brought his one surviving son, Jorgen, to Utah. He married his second wife Maren (Anglicized to Mary) some 9 years later in Utah  She had been married before but lost her first husband at an unknown date. I wish I knew more about her but she left very few records, although I could do more research! Peter and Maren had 6 more children together. The youngest two were twins, Enoch and Ephraim. Ephraim is my great-grandfather and is buried in California. He is the father of ...
