Twenty years ago, our family was in Germany for a year and during that time, we took a trip to a famous medieval town called Rothenburg during a school break. The school break was at the end of February, right after Fasching which is a week of celebration before Lent (like Carnival). Sadly, one of the gaps in our written family history is during the year we spent in Germany. But we have pictures! During Fasching, Susanna and Talmage went to kindergarten (more like preschool) and got their faces painted.
The next week was a school break so we took off for Rothenburg which had lots of demos of medieval punishments:
One of Garrett's favorite memories of this trip is going to a restaurant and getting a roasted half chicken all to himself. He was very fond of chicken.
This was part of the wall going around the city:

At our hotel where Mindy practiced her walking which she had just started:
The next day, we visited a children's museum (perhaps in Fulda) which everyone really enjoyed, even the older kids:
That next day we drove to the farmhouse where I had lived one summer about 18 years before. I lived with Paul and Krystal Allendorf and their three young boys while helping out on their farm and learning German. I kept in touch with them over the years so we visited them. They generously fed us dinner. I'm sure it was very chaotic with all ten of us.
Paul and Krystal with their four boys plus Paul's father whom I always called Opa. I have no idea what his first name was. With Mindy and Susanna:
After visiting them, we went to the Frankfurt temple and stayed at this very nice Marriott next door which had heated bathroom tile floors. We got a great rate because no one else was visiting this time of year and they were happy to give us the family suite. On the way home, we got a ton of snow which the children loved playing in. That is the blue van we bought in the background. There was a lot of driving and the snowstorm on the way home was pretty stressful, but it was a fun trip and I'm glad we were able to go.
Our neighbor gave us these very cute teddy bears, most of which had to be left behind when we went back to Utah. So we made sure to take lots of pictures.
