Family History October 2008

Oct. 5, 2008 (written by Paula)

Garrett got his cast off. (It was our year of the ambulance rides--7 times in 12 months, the last one being Garrett who got hit by a car and broke his arm.) Susanna had her last soccer game. She scored 3 goals in the season. We attended the Foothill Fall Festival. Garrett finished his bug collection of 35 bugs and 11 orders. Jan had 2 marching band performances this last week. Lincoln started attending Math Counts. He almost got into jazz band on piano but a 9th grader won. He's going to be doing "auxiliary". Everett did his Book project on Greek legends.

Our little Camille is in the hospital right now and we miss her. She had her G-tube surgery on Wednesday. It went well and she seemed to be recovering quickly but on Thursday night her breathing became very labored and she ended up back in the PICU on a ventilator. She is still on it and slowly improving. We're not sure exactly why she's having problems breathing. I believe that this has been building up for a long time and she ran out of reserves after the surgery. We hope she can come home soon. We went up to see her this morning and Bishop Garlick gave her a blessing. He blessed her that she would heal and overcome all the difficulties she's had in her life, that she would be calm and rest and heal. One of Camille's problems is that she really hates the ventilator and is frequently agitated despite being heavily sedated. She shakes her head back and forth trying to get rid of it which causes her to desat and stop breathing. She has moved to lower settings than she started on but it's still not low enough to come off.

Our Camille came home from the hospital last Sunday. She came off the vent on Wednesday, Oct. 8, in the evening. She's leaking out of her G-tube site so we have to change her dressing a lot. The skin around it gets sore from the stomach acid. She's lower on her oxygen at home at 5/16th a liter/min. She smiles more and we discovered that she got her 1st tooth last Sunday. She gets bored easily now and takes very short naps so we need to change that.

Jan had lots of marching band competitions and their band took first each time. Lincoln went to a Utah Valley Symphony concert with Grandma. We went to Southfork for a picnic and went to the library. The children are on fall break.

Scott did Physics Man and Quantum boy last Saturday. He gave lots of tours of his lab. We no longer have our kitchen but we got our new cabinets. We worked really hard yesterday cleaning up the yard and ho use. The house is slowly becoming more organized.

Jan took the PSAT this week and he conducted the Young Men's Chorus today.

Our little Camille turned 1. She liked her frosting. Today was the Primary program. Mindy was not exemplary in her behavior but the other children did well. Scott was the narrator and did well too. Jan returned home triumphantly from his band tour with 2 more 1st place trophies. Susanna is gearing up for her birthday and baptism. Everett got fitted for glasses so we got a Costco membership. Our little bigtooth maples are looking very lovely this year.

Visiting Susquehanna: The Priesthood Restoration Site

On our way home from Palmyra, we decided to go a couple of hours out of our way to visit the recently opened Priesthood Restoration Site along the Susquehanna River.  This is where we believe that Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery received the keys of the Aaronic Priesthood from John the Baptist which gave them the authority to baptize.  This site also has the restored Isaac and Elizabeth Hale home where Joseph and Emma lived for a year as well as the home where Joseph and Emma lived on their own. We spent a couple of hours there and I wouldn't have minded a few more minutes but we had a long way to go that night.  It's a beautiful setting, very much in rural Pennsylvania.  However, on the day we were there, cars at a racetrack nearby were detracting from the peace and quiet.  I'm guessing that's not as big of a problem on weekdays. The Hale Family was quite well-off for their day so their home was probably nicely decorated with wallpaper and carpet. ...

Hansen Family Reunion 2026, Wednesday and Thursday

We had another Hansen Family Reunion at Bear Lake! In total, there were 93 of us there with 11 missing--our biggest yet! We enjoyed seeing everyone and catching up a little bit. Here are some pictures. My goal was to get a picture of everyone, so if you don't see a picture of yourself, keep scrolling. Also, more individuals coming on the post for Friday. Sorry for the weird angles on some of them. Michelle made dinner the first night, chicken and vegetables with Michelle's specialty--lots of sides and plenty of leftovers. After dinner and clean-up, we had a FHE lesson outside on the lawn with Melanie in charge of the lesson after a few raucous songs. The newest addition to the family, #103. On Thursday morning, Kent and Melanie chaired breakfast with eggs and sausage and plenty for everyone. The cook with his breakfast sandwich: After breakfast, some of the group went rock-climbing, courtesy of Everett, David, and Susanna while more people went on a hike--the Limber Pine Hike....

Nauvoo Pageant!

I have been a negligent blogger this last month.  My reason is that we have been super busy.  At the end of July, we went to the Nauvoo Pageant.  We were able to participate once again in the Gold Cast like we did in 2007 and 2014.  We picked up our daughter at the end of her cross country camp in Price, Utah on our way out of town.  Then we drove to our friends' house in Golden, Colorado near Denver to stay the night.  It was fun to reconnect if only briefly.  The next night we were in Lawrence, Kansas, visiting my brother and sister-in-law and their family.  That was also fun but short.  We left the next morning, attending nearby church before taking off.  We arrived in Nauvoo around 4pm with just enough time to have dinner at our cabin before going to our orientation at the pageant building. The next day we went to the pageant building to get our costumes and to learn how to do our hair in the 1840 styles. ...
