Family History Oct. 5, 2008-Nov. 30, 2008

Oct. 5, 2008 (written by Paula)

Garrett got his cast off. Susanna had her last soccer game. She scored 3 goals in the season. We attended the Foothill Fall Festival. Garrett finished his bug collection of 35 bugs and 11 orders. Jan had 2 marching band performances this last week. Lincoln started attending Math Counts. He almost got into jazz band on piano but a 9th grader won. He's going to do "auxiliary." Everett did his Books project on Greek legends.

Our little Camille is in the hospital right now and we miss her. She had her G tube surgery on Wednesday. It went well and she seemed to be recovering quickly but early Thursday morning her breathing became very labored and she ended up back in the PICU on a ventilator. She is still on the ventilator and slowly improving. We're not sure exactly why she's having problems except that I believe this has been building up for a long time and she ran out of reserves after the surgery. We hope she can come home to us soon. We went up to see her this morning and Bishop Garlick gave her a blessing. He blessed her that she would heal and that she would overcome all the difficulties she's had in her life, that she would be calm and rest, and that she would heal. He said, By the power of the priesthood we bless you that you will be healed.

One of Camille's problems is that she really hates the ventilator and frequently is agitated despite being heavily sedated and will shake her head back and forth trying to get rid of it. This will cause her to desat and stop breathing. She had to be on fairly high settings at first and has moved lower but is still not quite low enough to come off.

Our CamiAnn came home from the hospital last Sunday. She came off the vent on Wednesday, Oct. 8, in the evening. She's leaking out of her G-tube site so we have to change her dressing a lot. The skin around it gets sore from stomach acid. She's lower on her oxygen at 5/16th liter/min. She smiles more and she got her first tooth. We discovered it last Sunday evening. She gets bored easily now and takes very short naps so we need to change that.

Jan had lots of marching band competitions and their band took first each time. Lincoln went to a Utah Valley Symphony concert with Grandma. We went to Southfork for a picnic. We went to the library. The children are on break from school.

Scott did Physics Man and Quantum Boy last Saturday, Oct. 11. He gave lots of tours of his lab. We no longer have our kitchen but we got our new cabinets. We worked really hard yesterday cleaning up the yard and house. The house is slowly becoming more organized. Jan took the PSAT this week and he conducted the Young Men's Chorus today at church.

Our little Camille turned 1. She liked her frosting. Today was the Primary program. Mindy was not exemplary in her behavior but the other children did well. Scott was the narrator and did well too. Jan returned triumphantly home from his band tour with two more 1st place trophies.

Susanna is gearing up for her birthday and baptism. Everett got fitted for glasses so we got a Costco membership [to get cheaper glasses]. Our little Bigtooth maples are looking very lovely this fall.

The youth put on a Halloween carnival for the Primary kids in the ward this week. Susanna took part in the second grade program (a little play) as a skeleton with a mother-frustrating costume. Susanna also turned 8 and got baptized. Her favorite present is a humongous pillow. We went to Joe Vera's after the baptism. Garrett and Lincoln went to a BYU Merit Badge Powwow. We got our family pictures taken on Thursday, and Jan had a Halloween/Fall Band concert. Dad in his work this week, met with some educators from Kenya. We started having the flooring put into the addition. We were supposed to get our counter this week but didn't due to some scheduling difficulties.

Jan had a Marching Band recording session and banquet along with a party with several of his marching band friends and with Garrett. David underwent a sleep study from which we haven't learned anything yet. We got the couches that used to belong to Grandma and put them in the addition. We got the flooring everywhere except in the kitchen. (Yes! Actual floor!) And the cooktop was installed although it leaks.

Nov. 16, 2008 (Jan)

Today we decided (the boys) that Camille's nickname shall be Clarence. It's just such an awesome name! Garrett, Lincoln, Everett, and Susanna had the Duet Festival this week. They all got into the Honors Recital. We got the flooring put into the new kitchen, almost all done. Camille visited the follow-up clinic and the pediatric developmental psychiatrist said that she is on track for her cognitive development. Dad says that means she can get bored just as well as anybody else.

Nov. 23, 2008 (Jan)

Susanna, Everett, Lincoln, and Garrett all went to the Duet Honors Recital this week and got $10 and a candy bar. The first round of work on the Addition is done yesterday. Jan found out that he made the All-State Jazz band, one of 5 trumpets in the state. He also went to a BYU Philharmonic concert last night and they played Symphonie Fantastique, which has a special story. (Berlioz is the composer.)

BYU got hammered by the University of Utah. David's sleep study said that he needs more sleep so Mom has decreed that every Bergeson in the land gets 9 hours of sleep. Everett had a Colonial Day where you go and do colonial stuff like write with quills and make candles.

Nov. 30, 2008 (Jan)

We had Thanksgiving dinner at our house this year. We played football before, the boys and Brian, Tyler and Bruce, and Lincoln broke his finger trying to catch the ball.

Susanna asked, "What's my blood type?" Talmage answered, "We're warm-blooded." Another Susanna quote, complete with convincing tone of voice is, "I'm under a lot of stress!" while she was playing a hard computer game. David came home for the week. We went to see the lights at Temple Square in SLC and the Church History and Art Museum. We went to Garrett's Utah Valley Youth Symphony concert and they played Beethoven's 5th Symphony. Jan went ranging a couple times for Driver's Ed, and is done with ranging. Garrett made it into All-State Concert Band, but Jan didn't.

2024 Hansen Family Reunion, Wednesday

Recently we had another Hansen Family Reunion at Bear Lake. We've been having these destination reunions since 2008. There were about 70 of us in attendance. Bruce and Michelle organized the activities and did a good job. I enjoyed myself! Hopefully lots of other people did too. We showed up on Wednesday afternoon and enjoyed a taco salad dinner, served by Neil and Kristie's family. We also worked on two mixer games:  a word search with the names of all 100 Hansen family members as well as a Bingo card that involved finding people with different attributes like recent high school graduation, birthdays in certain months, etc. The word search was definitely the most popular. Also popular was playing Nine-Square and Sandy Pickle (a cross between pickle ball and badminton). Thys and Katrina might have won! After dinner, we had an FHE activity/lesson. Liz had made a book with stories of the first ancestors to join the church. She had selected different stories for us to act out in g...

Hansen Family Reunion 2024, Thursday afternoon

For lunch on Thursday, Lauren and Kurt made Cafe Rio which was delicious.  On Thursday afternoon, we had free time at the lake. Heidi and Aaron rented a pontoon boat and took people out for rides. This was very popular. Some of us went on the kayaks and/or swimming or just hung out on the beach.

Book Review: Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper

This is a juvenile fiction book about a young girl named Melody with severe cerebral palsy.  Her body doesn't allow her to feed herself, speak, or do much at all.  She's very intelligent with a photographic memory but she can't really communicate.  Finally, in 5th grade, she gets a "Medi-Talker" which is a computer that speaks what she types in.  Finally she has a voice. This book explores what it is like to be severely physically disabled but not mentally disabled. It seems like one of the most frustrating of all scenarios.  She is completely aware of all the cruelty (subtle and otherwise) that her classmates inflict on her because they don't really want to include her in their activities.  One of the saddest moments in the book comes when she realizes that every one of her special ed classmates is kind, where the "normal" ones are not.  Who really has the worse disability? The book was a quick read and fairly enjoyable.  Wha...
