Family History April 5-May 31, 2009

April 5, 2009 (written by Scott)

David turned 19 yesterday. He got lots of mission-related gifts: socks, alarm clock, first aid kit, glasses, etc. Garrett finished his play. Lincoln made it into the honors recital in his new division that is full of more advanced players. He also received several compliments from the Baroque Ensemble people. Dad took David, Jan, Garrett, and Lincoln to the priesthood session at the Marriott Center and the traditional Harmon's ice cream afterwards. Jan played in a jazz festival and a concert band festival. Everett had a presentation about Pinkerton at school. They're studying the Civil War and Everett chose a spy (of course). Camille crawled about 12 inches for the first time. She is better at standing and even took one step. Paula despairs of her ever becoming a "real" crawler. Susanna started soccer again. Paula cleaned the shower (Lincoln claims to have helped) [this used to be a huge demoralizing job]. Garrett found $5. Talmage is trying not to suck his thumb (again). His reward will be M&M's. Mindy went to the Bean museum with Mom and Camille.

Unsere Osterhase aus Neufahrn hat uns eine Pakette geschenken. [Frau Czadek used to send us chocolate at Easter every year.] Actually there is something grammatically wrong with that sentence. This morning we read about Jesus' last week from the book of Matthew. Paula bought a ping-pong table and it has been wildly popular. Scott worked on sprinklers and dug outside for 5 hours yesterday. For the last 3 hours it was raining. Garrett and Lincoln played in the Canyon View Jr. High band concert. Mindy went shopping with Paula. On their way out of the store, Mindy saw a woman wearing a sleeveless and strapless shirt and exclaimed, "Why is she naked?' Susanna's soccer team continues its winning ways and Susanna continues to enjoy playing. Paula took Jan, Garrett, and Lincoln clothes shopping at Kohl's and spent $250 for them and the rest of the family (except, sadly, not (much) for Paula). Jan is looking into buying a new trumpet. Talmage is trying half-heartedly to stop sucking his thumb. Paula puts 10 M&M's in a cup in the morning and every time he gets caught sucking his thumb he forfeits one M&M to the person who caught him, usually Lincoln. Camille has figured out how to go from sitting to crawling on her own.

This week was spring break. It snowed about 10 inches early in the week. We all went to Arches on Friday and Saturday. Friday afternoon we drove to Green River and stayed at the Ramada Inn. Everyone except Paula and Camille had fun swimming in the pool. Camille thought the noise was excessive but was a little happier when Paula wrapped her in a towel and held her securely. The next day we drove to Arches and hiked the Delicate Arch and also the Landscape Arch. We went slowly, packed treats (Cheetos) and water, and it was pretty fun. I think everyone had a good time. We stopped in Price on the way home and spent $40 for dinner at Wendy's. David didn't go with us. Our last trip to Arches was just the Delicate Arch hike in 2001 and it was definitely more challenging.

David gave his missionary farewell talk today. He invited lots of people on Facebook and lots of friends from OHS and BYU came, as well as some old 7th Warders. David's guess is that 30 people came that he invited. We all worked on hoeing dirt over the sprinkler lines yesterday, between rain storms, and cleaned up the backyard. [It got messed up from our addition.] It was pretty muddy. Camille went to nursery today for the first time and did pretty well. Garrett was set apart as the teachers' quorum 2nd counselor. Jan, David, Garrett, and some friends went to the space center Friday night. Garrett spoke in church last Sunday. Mindy, Talmage, Susanna, and Everett went to Monday's Primary activity and came home with 80 Laffy Taffy's. Paula bought a new (used) trumpet for Jan online for $940. Jan played in a trumpet ensemble and Garrett played a French horn solo in the state solo/ensemble contest. We worked on the tennis ball mortar and had one successful launch. [We dropped off David at the MTC on April 29. We also had our 20th wedding anniversary on April 27.]

Today is Mother's Day. I received a new bike trailer/stroller and lots of cards from my children and husband. Yesterday we were able to finally plant grass seed in the backyard. Scott spent a lot of time smoothing out the dirt, adjusting sprinklers and then finally planting seed and covering it with a fine layer of peat moss which happened around 10pm. Garrett and Lincoln spent the day up at Lagoon with the Canyon View bands. We also attended Jan's trumpet recital in the Provo Tabernacle and Jan went to the Spring Fling with Camille Moss and the Jazz band played. We also had a Mother's Day dinner with my mom.

On Thursday Scott helped his mother after her foot surgery and stayed the night with her. I signed Everett and Lincoln up for swim team after standing in line for over an hour. Then I went to an insurance agency to sign up for homeowner's insurance and discovered my driver's license had expired in September. So I raced over to the drivers' license division before they closed. They were very nice and didn't make me retake the driver's test even though it should have been required. It helped that it was closing time and I have a good driving record.

Jan took the AP Calculus test and said it was easier than the practice tests. He is now preparing for the AP Chemistry test. He got a new Yamaha trumpet and now we need to sell the old one that we bought long ago from Rocky Van Asten. We started Camille on erythromycin but it doesn't seem to help her throwing up problem. She is crawling better and stands up in her crib.

We heard from David on Friday this week. They put him in the advanced language class so all his classes are in English and he has two companions that speak Portuguese. He is leaving for Germany on May 18 and we will talk to him then when he's at the airport. He is enjoying the MTC.

Everett had Hope of America on Tuesday night. The traffic was much better and the program shorter because they did it on 2 nights.

Garrett, Lincoln, and Jan went to youth conference at Aspen Grove Friday and Saturday. They had an evening activity following a rope while blindfolded up a steep path that led to the bishop and a campfire. Jonathan Tavernan (BYU bball player) spoke. I made a presentation on persistence. Camille has kind of learned a sign for asking to be picked up--opening and closing her hands a few times. Mindy is learning letters and sounds. She keeps asking Paula what makes the "ch" sound.

Susanna sold KoolAid yesterday and raked in $1.25. Talmage was one of  her customers. Paula took Jan to the chemistry banquet. Jan was the 2nd year chemistry student of the year at OHS. Camille takes the world's smallest bites of apple sauce. Perhaps some of it might possibly reach her stomach. Paula and I took her to the NICU reunion and we spoke with Drs. Stoddard and Gerday and some other people. Lincoln earned Star rank at the Court of honor and Garrett is one small requirement short of Life. Jan has to read 1000 pages by Thursday. He's on page 125.

May 24, 2009 (Jan)

This year Jan had his end-of-year band concert and got two teeth pulled in preparation for braces this summer. Mom went with Talmage on a field trip where they walked to Timpanogos [Park]. Garrett and Lincoln also had their end-of-year concert, and Jan and Garrett played loud in the second Marching Band rehearsal of the season. Mom and Susanna went to a mother-daughter dinner at the Youd's. We got air-conditioning installed in the upstairs. David called us Monday morning before boarding the plane for Germany. We also got a new, high quality mower this week that the boys love.

Lincoln, Mom and Dad drove a rental car to Davis, CA, this weekend for Lincoln's patriarchal blessing. We had a good visit with G&G Broadbent. Grandpa seems to be good. Grandma is much weaker and less lucid than 2 years ago. Paula's mother took care of everyone while we were gone. They went swimming at the SCERA and the Lehi pool. Everett stepped on Grandma's glasses and broke them by accident. This was the last week of school. Garrett had two parties on Friday. Lincoln looks forward to more free time. Jan is studying for the ACT and started marching band with Garrett. Talmage, Susanna, and Everett danced in the dance festival and competed in the field day. Last week Susanna ran the Foothill Fun Run (3K) in 19:20. She was first place for the girls in 2nd grade and 3rd place overall. Talmage and Everett also ran. Camille drank a little from a sippy cup in nursery.

Our Cousin Drew

This last week, my brother and his wife lost a very precious son, just 13 years old. He collapsed while running with a cross-country team and passed away before he could be revived. Everyone that knew Drew is broken-hearted at this loss. He was the happiest, most agreeable kid we knew. I remember him being at my house without anyone close to his age to hang out with, so he found our Duplo blocks and started building even though it is a toy that boys his age don't usually enjoy. He was so content. He didn't complain that I ever remember. His mother always called him the perfect child. He will leave a big hole in not only his immediate family but our extended family as well.  Here is a poem my aunt shared that seems fitting: Leave Taking How I would have liked to wave goodbye  and watch until you turned and smiled and disappeared on the horizon. You who taught me to dance  and let me teach you,  who laughed at my stories  and winked at me when I was sad. I can  just see you trav

Remembering Drew

This weekend we celebrated Drew's life. On Thursday night, we gathered as an extended family and had a dinner then sat in a big circle and talked about our memories of him. I took some notes and here is what people said. Grandpa (Gary Hansen):  The last time we saw Drew was last week on the 4th. I remember all the cousins on the trampoline, bouncing up and down and playing basketball. Grandma (Susan Hansen):  I asked Drew to come over last winter to teach my Activity Day boys how to make origami stars. He was very patient in working with them even though they were pretty clueless. Eventually they all went home happily with their stars. Paula: This last winter we invited Bruce and Michelle over for dinner and we didn't have anyone his age for him to hang out with. I remember that Drew found the Duplo blocks on his own and played with them all by himself, quite cheerfully entertaining himself. I asked him if he wanted to play with a different toy--maybe something more sophistica

Drew's Funeral

Yesterday was the viewing for Drew and then today was the funeral. There were a LOT of people at the viewing. Bruce and Michelle greeted people for almost four hours yesterday and then again this morning before the funeral. Bruce said that if weren't for Drew's death, it would be the best week of his life with so much love being shown to them. Friday actually began with a family run in Drew's honor. We started at a church by the new Lindon temple and ran to Bruce and Michelle's house with breakfast following. Friday night was the viewing. There was a very nice display of all things Drew. This was one of the pictures displayed and I recognized someone I know: We stood in line and the paramedics who worked on Drew stood in line behind us so we got to talk to them. Here's a fun fact:  They cover both Orem and Vineyard but Vineyard gets a lot more 911 calls than Orem per capita. It's a younger population and they are quicker to call. They said it's hard when the
