In the interest of sharing all the ups and downs of my garden--not just the successes but also the struggles--here is an update.
The last of my snow pea harvest. The plants are dying because of the heat. I got about 4 lbs. total harvest I think. I'm going to pull the plants out in a few days.
Here are a zucchini plant, cucumber plants and a basil plant. I'm not sure what's going on with the zucchini. Hopefully it survives. I've been giving it a little extra water the last few days. This weekend I'm going to harvest my garlic which look about done. I harvested a few that looked good.
My lettuce has given me a good harvest but are starting to go to seed with our hot weather. I started some summer lettuce seeds indoors last week but those will not be ready any time soon.
My winter squash are doing okay but maybe you can tell they're getting a little eaten. I have a bunch of volunteer potato plants from last year's potatoes. I'll pull them out in a week or two and maybe we'll get a few little potatoes.
I planted a watermelon several weeks ago that was hardly growing, so I bought another seedling and planted it a week ago with protection and it has been much happier than the other one.
I also planted a cantaloupe seedling that I bought to compensate for my honeydew that are getting badly eaten in a different area. I also put up some protection for the cantaloupe and it has been much happier.
Here's the watermelon that's barely grown since I planted it several weeks ago.
My strawberry harvest was pretty pathetic. They tasted sweet but were very small. I think this strawberry bed gets too much sun and not enough water. I am going to pull them out soon and start a bed somewhere else next year that gets less sun.
Onions are doing fine.
Here's a cucumber getting eaten but struggling along.
Here's a honeydew getting eaten. I don't know if it will survive.
Same as above only worse. I also planted some zinnias that are getting badly eaten. It's a little discouraging but certain plants just tend to be extra delicious to the bugs.
Tomatoes are doing pretty well. I have 25 plants and several of them have fruit set.
I picked this terrible-looking tomato off of one of my plants yesterday. I sure hope I don't get many that look like this. I don't know what's wrong with it. I'll just have to wait and see.
So there's the garden report! I look forward to getting some beans soon--picture not included--and hopefully some squash and zucchini. And, of course, tomatoes will be coming along eventually.
